  • Description

ON SATURDAY THE MINERS' UNIONS OF THE 6 MEMBER NATIONS OF THE EUROPEAN COAL AND STEEL FEDERATION MET AT THE WESTFALENHALLE IN DORTMUND FOR THE FIRST EUROPEAN MINERS' MEETING.

SOME 20,000 FILLED THE VAST HALL TO HEAR ADDRESSES FROM MINERS' LEADERS. THE FIRST SPEAKER WAS HEINRICH GUTERMUTH, PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL MINERS' ASSOCIATION, AND HE WAS FOLLOWED TO THE DAIS BY DINO DEL BO, PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN FEDERATION FOR COAL AND STEEL.

THE MEETING WAS CALLED SO THAT THE MINERS COULD PROTEST AGAINST THE SLOWNESS OF INTEGRATION WITHIN THE COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES OF THE EUROPEAN COAL AND STEEL FEDERATION. THE MINERS SAY THAT LITTLE HAS BEEN DONE SINCE OCTOBER 1957 AND THEY ARE INCREASINGLY WORRIED ABOUT THEIR POSITION IN REGARD TO FULL EMPLOYMENT AND PAY SCALE.

THE MINERS ARE CALLING FOR A 35 HOUR WEEK -- A 7 HOUR DAY, FIVE DAYS A WEEK; A GUARANTEED WAGE, WHICH THEY SAY SHOULD BE 25 PER CENT HIGHER THAN COMPARATIVE INDUSTRIES; OLD AGE PENSIONS THAT ARE 75 PER CENT OF THEIR FULL PAY; AND FOUR WEEKS HOLIDAYS.

SINCE TO GRANT THESE DEMANDS TO THE MINERS WOULD MEAN AN INCREASE IN THE PRICE OF FUEL, AT PRESENT UNLIKELY TO BE CONSIDERED, THE DEMANDS COULD ONLY BY MET BY STATE SUBSIDIES.
