Background: One hundred thousand people were in the massive Aryamehr Stadium in Teheran on Sunday (1 September) for the opening ceremony of the seventh Asian Games. The opening ceremony was highlighted by a parade in which The People's Republic of China stole the limelight. China is making its first appearance in high class international sport since the 1952 Olympic Games. The team's appearance was greeted with cheering and prolonged applause by the huge crowd.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Shah of Iran and members of the Royal Family.
In all, three thousand athletes from 26 nations are taking part in the Games. Most major sports will be contested during the two weeks of competition.
