  • Description

Another round of talks has started in Paris between the North Vietnamese and the Americans, in an effort to end the fighting in South Vietnam.

President Nixon's special envoy, Dr. Henry Kissinger, is meeting the Norther Vietnamese Politburo member, Le Duc Tho, at the French Communist Party's villa at Gif-Sur-Yvette on the outskirts of Paris. It was here that they worked out much of the Vietnam peace accords.

The two negotiators began this round of discussions on May 16th, and their current session will put the finishing touches to a tentative agreement they worked out last month (May) to curb the widespread ceasefire violations since the truce took effect.

Their talks are expected to lead to a resumption of the United States mine-sweeping operations off the North Vietnamese coast, and of discussions on American post-war economic aid to Hanoi. The meeting is also expected to help pave the way for talks on ending the fighting in the Khmer Republic, and strengthening an overall Indochina settlement. And they will discuss a replacement on the International Control Commission for Canada, which is withdrawing from Vietnam.

Dr. Kissinger was accompanied by White House Press Secretary, Ronald Ziegler. This is the first time Mr. Ziegler has been directly involved in Vietnam negotiations.
