  • Description

About 5-thousand people marched through the centre of Munich in West Germany on Saturday (21 May) on a disarmament demonstration. Similar marches took place the same day in the West German cities of Frankfurt, Bremen and Essen.

SYNOPSIS: As ever, young people predominated in the ranks of marches during the low-key Munich demonstration, which went off without incident.

The Bavarian capital, with its large student population, based in the famous Schwabing district, has always been an active centre for political expression in Germany. These marchers want all armaments-- tanks as well as bombs, and standing armies to be scrapped.

Among the most tireless advocates of ??? in the 1960s and 1970s have been the followers of Eastern religions, whose creed is pacifism throughout the world. Their banners proclaim the recurring theme of the "No More Hiroshimas".

As their voices rose in chants and their flags flapped, the marchers would have been heartened to know that, at the same time in Geneva, Soviet and American delegates were narrowing their differences on strategic nuclear arms limitation. Bilateral discussions between the two countries will continue with the aim of concluding a new agreement to replace the 1972 SALT agreement which expires in October.

But at the age of 31, Beckenbauer had decided that his ageing legs would better survive the gentler pressures of the North American League. He signed with the New York Cosmos for a three-year contract that will pay him three million dollars.

Like their captain, Bayern Munich have this season faded from their wonderful peak. Borussia took the lead through Heynckes' goal in the 20th minute.

Borussia lacked sentiment on this great occasion. Two minutes later they went two goals up, when their striker Stielicke burst through to score and dull the bloom for Bayern supporters.

But a drubbing seemed the wrong note on which Beckenbauer should bow out. After all for more most glamorous and feted player in Germany, his name a synonym for local and national success.

Bayern did him proud, sweeping back to score just before half time. This was more like the stuff that had made the club Germany's finest in the 1970s.

In the second half, Bayern strove to score another to let their greatest-ever captain depart with a flourish. And that second goal did come, for a fitting and festive climax.
