INTRODUCTION An auction of the furniture and fittings from Paris' famous Claridge hotel to be held in the French capital on Sunday (6 March). The hotel closed last December.

SYNOPSIS: The Claridge was once one of Paris' most famous hotelries. But last year, it fell victim to sharp rent increases and the company was forced to closed the doors for the last time.

So, more than 60 years after the hotel was founded, the furniture and fittings will go under the auctioneer's hammer. Hundreds turned out for a sale preview, hoping to spot a bargain or a souvenir of a bygone age. The days of the sophisticated after noon tea dance of the 1920s have now gone for all time -- here at least.

The Claridge was frequently the victim of military takeovers. At difference times it was the headquarters for the French War Ministry , the German Army and General De Gaulle. It continued to do business on the Champs-Elysees long after other hotels made way for the mods shopping arcades that dominate the broad avenue. To keep the doors open the company would have had to pay about a million U.S dollars a year in rent...a 400 percent increase. The insurance company owners of the building will rebuild it as a shopping centre.
