  • Description

Road barriers on both sides yesterday (Friday) barred the way for refugees along the Thai-Cambodian border the day after the foil of Phnom Penh to the Khmer Rouge.

But in the Cambodian frontier town of Poipet, there was no sign of the insurgents who'd taken the capital after a five-year conflict.

People in the town stayed away from work and wandered about the streets while white flags of surrender flew from government buildings.

At the town's district office, weapons were collect by officials from former government soldiers -- most in civilian clothes although a few still were their army uniforms.

Poipet is about 190 miles (300 kms) from Bangkok and about 100 miles (160 kms) from Battambang, cambodia;s second largest town. It's understood that Khmer Rouge forces from the Battambang area entered Poipet about half an hour after this film was taken.

Among the many remaining unknowns about the situation in Cambodia was the fate of Battambang and several to the large towns held by the former government at the time of its surrender in Phnom Penh. Radio appeals by Khmer Houge leaders yesterday urged all government military commanders in the provinces to lay down their arms.
