  • Description

A GREEK-CYPRIOT WAS SHOT DEAD, AND TWO OTHERS - ONE OF THEM A WOMAN - SERIOUSLY INJURED IN AN OUTBREAK OF SHOOTING THIS MORNING (TUESDAY) IN NICOSIA. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED ON THE 'GREEN LINE' - THE CEASEFIRE LINE THROUGH THE CENTRE OF THE CITY'S OLD WALLED SECTION.

YESTERDAY (MONDAY) THE SPORADIC SHOOTING OUTBREAKS CONTINUED IN THE AREA SURROUNDING THE KYRENIA PASS ON THE MAIN ROAD NORTH FROM NICOSIA TO THE COASTAL TOWN OF KYRENIA. AT THE TURKISH-CYPRIOT VILLAGE OF TEMPLOS, REPORTED TO BE ENTIRELY SURROUNDED BY GREEK-CYPRIOT IRREGULARS, FIRING WENT ON FOR SEVERAL HOURS BEFORE A PARTY OF CANADIANS (LED BY LT.-COL. ANDREW WOODCOST) ARRIVED AND ARRANGED A CEASEFIRE. CANADIAN TROOPS OF THE U.N. FORCE ALSO PREVENTED FURTHER TROUBLE AT A FARMHOUSE, NEAR DHIKOMO, A GREEK-CYPRIOT VILLAGE IN THE SAME AREA. THE FARM, WHICH IS SURROUNDED BY TURKISH-CYPRIOTS, IS A PARTICULARLY RICH ONE, WITH LIVESTOCK WORTH MANY THOUSANDS OF POUNDS. THE CANADIAN DETACHMENT STOOD BY AS TWO FLOCKS OF SHEEP WERE MOVED DOWN INTO DHIKOMO VILLAGE FOR SAFETY.

THE PROBLEM OF FINDING OUT THE TRUTH ABOUT WHICH SIDE STARTED ANY PARTICULAR INCIDENT IS AN ESPECIALLY DIFFICULT ONE FOR JOURNALISTS. THE GREEK-CYPRIOTS INEVITABLY SAY THE TURKISH-CYPRIOTS STARTED FIRING, BUT WHEN JOURNALISTS VISIT THE TURKISH SIDE, THEY GET THE OPPOSITE STORY. BOTH SIDES HAVE ESTABLISHED INFORMATION CENTRES IN NICOSIA, AND YESTERDAY (MONDAY) OUR CAMERAMAN VISITED A TURKISH PRESS INFORMATION POST IN THE CITY. THE PICTURES ON THE WALLS - MANY OF THEM ILLUSTRATING ATROCITIES ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN COMMITTED BY THE OTHER SIDE, ARE AVAILABLE FREE OF CHARGE, ALONG WITH AMPLE SUPPLIES OF TURKISH-CYPRIOTS NEWSPAPERS AND PRESS HAND-OUTS. JOURNALISTS ARE EAGERLY RECEIVED AND STRENUOUS EFFORTS ARE MADE TO ANSWER THEIR QUESTIONS IN DETAIL. (A VISIT TO A GREEK-CYPRIOTS INFORMATION CENTRE WOULD PROVIDE EXACTLY THE SAME STORY).

BUT YESTERDAY (MONDAY) THE CENTRE OF INTEREST OF THE CYPRUS PROBLEM WAS ATHENS, WHERE GENERAL GRIVAS SPOKE WITH REPORTERS (AT THE AIRPORT BEFORE GREETING THE CYPRUS MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR AND FORMER EOKA LEADER GEORGHADJIS); AND LATER HAD A MEETING WITH GREEK PREMIER PAPANDREOU ON HIS POSSIBLE RETURN TO CYPRUS. THE STORY ENDS WITH LAST NIGHT'S MEETING BETWEEN PRESIDENT MAKARIOS AND OTHER GREEK MINISTERS - THE LAST MEETING BEFORE THE EXPECTED PRESS CONFERENCE TODAY (TUESDAY).
