Background: Israeli security forces in Northern Sinai claim to have smashed an Egyptian spy ring based at El Arish. When troops moved into a house in the town yesterday, they arrested twenty people and confiscated a radio transmitter.
An official communique from Tel Aviv said the spy ring had been active since last November. Information it gathered had been transmitted to Cairo from a transmitter hidden in a bunker in El Arish.
Troops who searched the premises found a quantity of papers and espionage equipment as well as the radio. They said that military information was collected by local people in El Arish and relayed on the radio.
Further enquiries are going on, said the announcement while the twenty people arrested remain in custody.
