  • Description

A 10,410-ton Russian freighter was seized late Wednesday (June 9) in San Francisco Bay in retaliation for damage alleged to have been cause by Soviet trawlers to Atlantic coast lobster fishermen. A court order was served prohibiting the freighter to leave the harbour or continue on its journey to the Far East.

The Vladivostock-registered ship, the Suleyman Stalskiy, was boarded and a writ of attachment presented to its captain. The writ had been obtained by a corporation in Wesport Point, massachusetts, who owns a fleet of lobster boats.

The corporation is demanding 177,000 dollars in actual damages and 200,0000 dollars in exemplary damages. An attorney for the corporation said the writ was served on the freighter because the trawlers, which do not enter U.S. ports, were inaccessible.
