Background: An underground train ploughed into the rear of a stationary train in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Tuesday (20 February). Thirteen people were injured in the accident and taken to hospital. Another 30 had to be treated on the spot for cuts and bruises.
Ambulance teams rushed to the site of the crash in a tunnel under one of the city's busiest thoroughfares. Railway workmen at the scene reported that the accident was indirectly caused by a blackout which hit Buenos Aires earlier in the day. The railway signalling system was disrupted when power was later restored.
Eyewitnesses said the driver of the second train was unable to see the stationary train ahead of him because of a sharp curve in the tunnel near the crash scene.
