  • Description

SIXTY MILES SOUTHWEST OF KUCHING, THE CAPITAL OF SARAWAK, IS TEBEDU - SCENE OF RECENT ATTACKS BY BRENGUN-ARMED BANDITS FROM ACROSS THE INDONESIAN BORDER.

TEBEDU, WHICH IS ONLY TWO MILES AWAY FROM THE INDONESIAN BORDER, IS NOW BEING CONSTANTLY PATROLLED BY MEN FROM THE 40 ROYAL MARINE COMMANDOS.

IN THE COURSE OF THEIR ROUND-THE-CLOCK PATROLS ALONG THE BORDER AREA, THE MARINES STOPPED TO TALK TO VILLAGERS LIVING DEEP IN THE RUGGED JUNGLE. THEY ALSO TALKED TO DAYAKS IN LONG-HOUSES.

ALSO ENGAGED IN PATROLLING ARE HELICOPTERS FROM THE ROYAL NAVY, WHO ESCORT THE MARINES ENTERING THE DENSE JUNGLE FROM THE AIR.

IN RECENT WEEKS, THE LAST ON APRIL 27, ARMED BANDITS THRICE ATTACKED THE AREA. THE TEBEDU POLICE STATION WAS THE MAIN TARGET.

THE STATION IS NOW MANNED BY THE MARINES, WHO HAVE ERECTED BARBED WIRE ENTANGLEMENTS AND OTHER OBSTACLES AROUND THE PERIMETER.

MOVEMENT BY THE MARINES IS MOSTLY BY FOOT BECAUSE THE JUNGLE ROADS ARE ALMOST IMPASSABLE FOR VEHICLES.
