In the United States, people are renowned for seeking unusual ways of spending their leisure time. An annual event which is guaranteed to be more original every year is the Great Race, held in Boston, Massachusetts. This year's event was held on Saturday (4 June) and 2,000 people took part.
SYNOPSIS: Obviously a great amount of effort was put into the vehicles -- although some ended up with an easier ride than others.
There was only one rule to be adhered to and that was that the vehicles must be non-pollutant. Probably the most popular were dozens of different types of bicycles.
Other preferred more natural transport...
Dress was optional.
Canoeists had a separate course -- within walking distance from the start. One of the competitors brought along a musician to accompany him on the 25 mile (40 km) route.
Lazy contestants borrowed transport from a supermarket.
The race has been held for the last ten years. It began when two friends were drinking and one bet another he could cover the distance quicker on foot than the other could be canoe. Both cheated so no one won.
The spirit of that challenge and the cheating lives on. No one won any prizes, but the competitors and the 13,000 people who turned out to watch all took part in a massive party afterwards.
