Background: The President of Zambia, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, praised Dr. David Livingstone at a centenary memorial service to the missionary at Chipundu on Tuesday (May 1).

President Kaunda unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion on the Livingstone monument at the village, which is in Zambia's Serenje district. Dr. Livingstone died in the village a hundred years ago.

In his speech President Kaunda contrasted the achievements of Dr. Livingstone and Cecil Rhodes. He said Rhodes came to Africa to conquer, exploit, dominate and suppress while Dr. Livingstone came as a servant of the people.

Rhodes had accumulated a huge fortune while Livingstone believed it was his duty to live frugally.

President Kaunda said Dr. Livingstone was one of the greatest men to live and work in Africa; a man whose only ambition was to serve the people.

He had tried to achieve four things: to teach the word of God, to use his training as a doctor to heal the sick, to try and promote the development of African society in order to establish Christian teachings more firmly and to seek an end to slavery.

Among people attending the service were members of the missionary's family.
