  • Description

Thousands of factory workers stormed through the streets of the Italian city of Milan on Monday (5 January) protesting against the closure of the British-owned car factory Leyland Innocenti.

Leyland Innocenti became the first major victim of Italy's industrial crisis in November when British Leyland announced that it was putting its Italian subsidiary into liquidation.

The metalworkers' trade union federation immediately ordered the 4, 500-strong work force to occupy the plant which assembles Mini cars on the outskirts of Milan.

On Christmas Day hundreds of workers and their families occupying the plant celebrated Midnight Mass there in a makeshift chapel.

But on Monday, the workers' took to the streets and marched to the government office in Milan demanding a solution to the mass unemployment the factory's closure will create.
