  • Description

Speaking at a luncheon in Klagenfurt, July 6 - given at Herr Wedenig, provincial governor of Carinthia - visiting Soviet Premier Khrushchev warned Austrians that if rockets were fired over their territory from NATO bases in northern Italy this would violate their neutrality.

Khrushchev said: "Neutrality is not a mountain range which can isolate you from the outside world." The fight for peace us the concern of all peoples, and Austria, as a neutral country , could do much to secure peace on the European continent. Referring to Italy, the Soviet Premier added: "When a neighbour plays with fire one should be on one's guard and not shrink from giving him good advice - one may not play with fire."
Earlier the same day, at Villach where he spent the night, Khrushchev decided to cut short his tour of the provinces, stating he was tired "from so much bus travel". He returned to Vienna by train in the evening, after attending a reception at Graz, Styria, instead of remaining overnight and visiting factories in the area.

It is thought that the Soviet Premier may want to get as much rest as he can before going through a crowded programme during his last 24 hours in Vienna. He is also believed to be devoting extra time to the preparation of his television appearance in Vienna, July 7, and of a press conference before his departure on July 8.
