INTRODUCTION: The opening round of the European Formula Two motor racing championships at Silverstone, England on Sunday (6 March) produced some exciting competition, rounded off with a dramatic finish.

SYNOPSIS: Waiting for the flag on the starting grid -- Ingo Hoffman of Brazil in a Ralt RT1 BMW, Didier Pironi in a Martini Mark 22 Renault and Michel Leclere of France in pole position in his Kauhsen Renault.

Leclere was among the leaders in the early stages of the race, but retired after 35 laps with a dead engine. Car number 4 -- a Martini Mark 22 Renault driven by Rene Arnoux of France was tailing British-based belgian driver Patrick Neve in his March 772P BMW from the start -- a situation which paid off handsomely later. Neve led from the start until, with only seven laps to go, he was forced into the pits with a broken rear wheel. With the wheel replaced he carried on to take third place, only 18 seconds behind the winner.

This left Arnoux in an unassailable position -- he cruised home to take chequered flag 15 seconds ahead of Britain's Ray Mallock in a Chevron B40 Hart, with Neve setting a new lap record in his efforts to make up lost ground -- finishing just four seconds behind Mallock.
