  • Description

Italy backs Greece's application to join the Common Market, Greek Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis heard after his arrival in Rome on Monday (29 September).

Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro told his guest later in the day "Greece's request for membership of European Community, which Italy warmly supports, will tend to bring our two peoples even closer together."
Observers believe one of the purposes of Mr. Karamanlis' visit was to gain Italy's support for the application. Mr. Karamanlis has already had a pledge of support from French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, but Italy is currently President of the Community.

Signor Moro also brought up the Cyprus dispute which he said had aroused "strong disquiet" about security in the eastern Mediterranean.k He stressed the links between Italy and Turkey and repeated Italy's desire to find with the help of other Common Market countries a just and peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem.

Signor Moro has not so far mentioned Greece's withdrawal from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation -- NATO -- but Italy has had to take an additional defence burden because of the withdrawal and he is expected to urge Mr. Karamanlis to reconsider the move.

Mr. Karamanlis continued his talks with Signor Moro on Tuesday (30 September). He is also scheduled to visit Pope Paul in the Vatican on Wednesday (I October ) before leaving.
