  • Description

On the fifteenth anniversary of the surrender of the German Army, May 8, Delegate-General Delouvrier, Algeria's Civil Administration head, took the salute at a march past in Algiers.

Bands, marching troops and motor cycle squads participated in the parade, which was routed past the statue of Joan of Arc. May 8 is doubly dear to France, for it recalls - apart from the German surrender - Joan of Arc's first military triumph - the relief of Orleans, besieged by the English in 1429. Their repulse from its walls heralded a great French re-awakening.
