• Short Summary

U.S. ASTRONAUT, LIEUTENANT SCOTT CARPENTER, ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE AND FAMILY, WENT TO THE WHITE?

  • Description

U.S. ASTRONAUT, LIEUTENANT SCOTT CARPENTER, ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE AND FAMILY, WENT TO THE WHITE HOUSE IN WASHINGTON, JUNE 5, TO RECEIVE THE PERSONAL CONGRATULATIONS OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY ON HIS SUCCESSFUL THREE-ORBIT FLIGHT, MAY 24.

PRESIDENT KENNEDY GREETED THE CARPENTERS IN HIS OFFICE. "I CANNOT IMAGINE BETTER REPRESENTATIVES OF WHAT WE LIKE TO THINK OUR COUNTRY STANDS FOR THAN THE MEN WHO HAVE TAKEN PART IN THE FLIGHTS," THE PRESIDENT SAID.

ESCORTING THE ASTRONAUT TO AN ADJACENT ROOM, PRESIDENT KENNEDY INTRODUCED HIM TO THE PRESS AND MEMBERS OF THE WHITE HOUSE STAFF. WHILE MRS. CARPENTER AND THE FOUR CHILDREN STOOD BY PROUDLY, PRESIDENT KENNEDY MADE THE POINT THAT THE NATION SHOULD NOT LOSE SIGHT OF THE FACT THAT THE ASTRONAUTS 'HAVE BEEN UNUSUALLY FORTUNATE' IN HAVING SUCH STRONG SUPPORT FROM THEIR WIVES AND CHILDREN
