Background: Thousands of civil war refugees who fled from Chad to neighbouring Cameroun have been returning to their homeland. An operation to repatriate 800 families has just ended with the last groups coming across the one remaining ferry to Ndjamena. A similar programme to bring back refugees from Nigeria is now under way. On their return, however, refugees face enormous problems in a vast country brought to the brink of ruin by a civil war which has seen the partial occupation of Chad by Libya and continued fighting between rival factions within the country.
