Background: Ajax of Amsterdam and Independiente of Argentina drew one goal each at Buenos Aires on Thursday (7 September) in a tightly-fought first-leg clash in the 1972 World Clubs' Soccer Cup.
An estimated 55,000 spectators watched the game, which was marred by an abundance of fouls, bickering and injuries, Cruyff, Ajax's centre-forward, scored the first goal of the game with a long lob over the head of independiente keeper Santoro in the sixth minute, but 20 minutes later limped off the field with damaged ankle tendons after a foul by Independiente forward Mircoli.
Argentina equalised 38 minutes into the second half when Santoro made a 40-yard drive down the centre which Ajax goalkeeper Study had little chance of stopping.
SYNOPSIS: Sixty-five thousand spectators eagerly await the start of the first-leg World Clubs' Soccer Cup match between the Argentineans' Independiente, playing at home, and Amsterdam's Ajax team. And at Kick-off, Ajax launch an early and energetic assault.
Six minutes in, and Ajax's centre-forward Cruyff takes a long lob into the Argentina net over the head of goal-keeper Santoro. Jubilation amongst the visiting Dutchmen...but soon Cruyff is seen to limp off with injured ankle tendons after a foul.
With the start of the second half, Independiente make a determined attempt to win the equaliser as early as possible.
Ajax counter-attack but the Argentineans' defence is too strong. Then the ball is back with Independiente...and Ajax goalkeeper Study is called upon to make a save at the very fast of his attackers....
In a match marred by fouls and bickering. Independiente's striker Pastoriza is felled at the edge of his penalty area. He leaves the field after this...but is back a few minutes later after treatment.
An Argentina corner could be dangerous, but Ajax clears and makes off downfield towards the Independent goal.
Then in the final 15 minutes Ajax relax their iron-hard defence for one moment too long as Sa storms through to get the equaliser for Argentina.
