  • Description

The red globe glistening below earth was just another anti-climax of Holland's mystery hole at Wormer - it was the setting sun's reflection.

About 2-feet in diameter, and over 60-foot deep, this surprise hole first appeared September 16-17, a few nights after Russia's Lunik launch. The Mayor's wife said she heard something fall. The shaft is almost regularly five-sided.

The Netherlands's Defence Ministry has been called in to probe the hole. Rumours have it that the hole was caused by, or contains, either a meteor: Lunik fragment: part of a US rocket: piece of aircraft fuselage: bomb: or is merely a practical joke.

Special military detection and probing equipment has been brought up for the GBP10,000 "Big Dig". A Defence Ministry spokesman estimated that "something" should be located at about 20-metres (60-feet) and that the dig would continue until the mystery object had been unearthed.

Meanwhile rumours continue to fly through Wormer village. Tourists and sightseers come in their dozens to inspect the hole and give their theories of how a 60-feet shaft suddenly appeared in a north Holland field.
