  • Description

Four soldiers were shot dead on Thursday (May 18) in a terrorist attack on the Montevideo home of Uruguayan army Commander-in-Chief General Florencio Gravigna.

The four soldiers, in an army truck on guard outside General Gravigna's house, were riddled with machine-gun bursts from a passing car. Some shots also hit the front of the house.

A soldier on guard on the roof of the house returned the fire, but it was not immediately known if any of the attackers was hit.

The attackers were believed to be members of the Tupamaros, a left-wing urban guerrilla group which has brought Uruguay to a state of internal war with a long series of kidnapping, assassinations and bank raids over the past few years.

Last month the Government of President Juan Maria Bordaberry and the ???rmed forces were given special powers to combat the Tupamaros and other leftwing organisations.

Last month the Government of President Juan Maria Bordaberry and the armed forces were given special powers to combat the Tupamaros, and other leftwing groups, which in recent years have been responsible for a series of kidnapping, assassinations and bank raids. The special powers were originally granted for thirty days, but the time-limit was extended a further forty-five days when it expired a few days ago.

The Minister of Defence, General Magnani, visited the scene of the shooting and talked with troops on duty at the time. Thursday's shooting was the second involving armed forces in two months. In April, Tupamaros assassinated a naval officer, two police officers and a former Government official. In subsequent gun-battles with police eight Tupamaros were killed.
