Background: Last Friday ( 27 Feb. ) General de Gaulle attended the funeral of his parish priest at Les Deux Eglises, Colombey. It was his first appearance at a public gathering since his resignation as President of France on 27th April last year.
Soon after his resignation last year, General De Gaulle and Madame de Gaulle sought the seclusion of Ireland's western coast at remote Castle Bay, Connemara, to relax from his former duties. Security officers prevented cameramen and photographers from invading their privacy on that occasion. The General made a brief appearance on June 1st to cast an absentee vote for the French Presidential Elections. Since his return to France General de Gaulle's only movements have been within his family circle, and a short tour of World War One battlefields. He is believed to be spending most of his time completing a further volume of his memoirs.
Last Friday and General came out of virtual seclusion to honour the memory of his former parish priest l'abbe Eugene Drouot. He was one of 400 mourners and 80 clergy.
