  • Description

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshie Kimura arrived in Accra from London on Thursday (31 October) to begin a two-day official visit to Ghana.

Accompanied by his wife and a thirteen-strong delegation, Mr. Kimura was welcomed at the airport by his Ghanaian counterpart, Lieutenant-Colonel Kwame Baah.

The visit was the first by a top Japanese Minister to Chana. Mr. Kimura's african tour will also take him to Nigeria, Zaire, Tanzania and Egypt.

The tour was aimed at promoting friendly relations between Japan and Africa following criticisms of Japan's trade links with South Africa and Rhodesia at the last summit meeting of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).

After a short session of talks with Lieutenant-Colonel Baah, the Japanese Foreign Minister paid a courtesy visit to Ghana's Head of State, Colonel Ignatius Acheampong at his official residence, Castle Osu. The two men exchanged gifts, and Mr. kimura invited Colonel Acheampong to visit Japan in the near future.
