    Background: WARSAW, POLAND

Medals were presented to 74 Poles by the Yad Vashem Institute of National Memory in Warsaw City Hall, on April 22. The Jerusalem-based Institute awards the medals to people who helped Jews escape the Nazis during World War II, an offence punishable by death, About 4,000 people have already been decorated by Yad Vashem among them 800 Poles. The Institute's president, Dr. Ichek Arad, presented the medals in a simple ceremony. Among the recipents was Mr. Kazimierz Debnicki, a Polish writer who has supported Jews from the Warsaw ghetto. He paid tribute to fellow members of the underground organisation who had defied Nazi dictates and had lost their lives to help others. Mr. Debnicki was part of the socialist underground group founded by Janusz Korczak, a Polish writer of Jewish origin who established various aid organisations to help Jews until his death at the hands of the Nazis in 1942.
