  • Description

The Fourth Congress of Veterans of the Algerian War of Independence was opened in Algiers on Tuesday (8 May) by the Algerian Minister for Veterans, Mr. Mahmoud Guenez.

The veterans were also addressed by Algerian Head of State Houari Boumedienne who called on them to continue the struggle that they begun in 1954 -- the year that the National Liberation Front (FLN) was founded. He went on to tell the 600 delegates that there were still, in Algeria, many 'opportunists' who sought to denigrate the FLN and all its past achievements.

Subjects to be discussed during the three days of the Congress include ways of improving the veterans' standard of living, of increasing their impact as a political organisation, and of acquainting Algerian youth with the history of their eight-year struggle.

Apart from veterans from many parts of Algeria the conference is also being attended by guests from other 'armies of national liberation'. They include representatives from North Vietnam, Cuba, Mozambique, Angola, South West Africa, Portuguese Guinea, South Africa, Yugoslavia and Albania, and of Al Fatah, the Pathet Lao and the Viet Cong.

The Congress is on of a series of meetings currently being held in Algeria as part of a programme of 'renovation' of the FLN and other organisations of the masses. The programme was begun last december at the instigation of President Boumedienne.
