    Dr. Jonas Savimbi, leader of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), held private talks with the Ivory Coast President, Felix Houphouet-Boigny, on the current situation in Angola in Abidjan on Thursday (18 December).

    President Houphouet-Boigny, who is regarded as one of Africa's most respected elder statesmen, received Dr. Savimbi and his three-man accompanying delegation at his private residence in the Ivory Coast capital.

    Dr. Savimbi's meeting with the President came as part of a major African tour to discuss the fighting between the joint forces of UNITA and the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) against the rival Soviet-backed Popular Movement for the liberation of Angola (MPLA). The UNITA leader is seeking full official support for the joint UNITA-FNLA Democratic Republic of Angola before the next Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit.

    Some fifteen African states have already recognised the rival Luanda-based government of the MPLA.

    The O.A.U. heads of state are scheduled to discuss the conflict in Angola at next month's meeting in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. Dr. Savimbi told journalists at Abidjan airport that he as willing to attend the summit to put forward his views, if he were invited.

    SYNOPSIS: At his private residence in the Ivory Coast capital, Abidjan, on Thursday, President Felix Houphouet-Boigny received Dr. Jonas Savimbi, leader of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) for talks on the current situation in the former Portuguese colony. They spent over forty-five minutes together, discussing the Angolan conflict.

    Dr. Savimbi's visit to Ivory Coast came as part of a major African tour which has already taken in Zambia, Uganda and Zaire. He's seeking official support for the joint UNITA-FNLA (National Front for the Liberation of Angola) claim rightful government.
