NEAL: "This is time lapse photography, a series of pictures of Jupiter compressing time as Voyager One approaches the planet. Notice the silver-coloured band of clouds near the equator, moving in one direction, while another multi-coloured band below moves in an opposite direction.

"At slower speeds you can see clouds swirling around the giant red spot. Scientists say these pictures leave them happily bewildered, because what they see is not what they expected. Jupiter is totally different from other planets. Next Monday (5 March) the Voyager will fly by the planet passing within less than 200,000 miles (321,868 kilometres) and when it does it will point its camera at the moon Io, which is expected to look like this.

"Io is one of thirteen moons of Jupiter, most of which will be photographed in closeup for the first time. Roy Neal, NBC. News, in Los Angeles."

Background: The space probe Voyager One is getting nearer to its destination, a close fly-past of the planet Jupiter. And as the Voyager nears the largest planet in our solar system, it sends back ever clearer photographs. They are being received and composed into sequences at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, as the N.B.C's Roy Neal reports.
