    The Israeli Agriculture Minister, Mr. Hayim Gvati arrived in Abidjan on Tuesday (23 January) as an official guest of the Ivory Coast Government.

    Mr. Gvati is on his way around most of the African capitals to report back on the general agricultural and economic situation of the nations.

    Officially, he is returning a visit by an African Agriculture minister, but his mission is also an attempt to stop any more erosion of Israel's position in Africa.

    Mr. Gavati will spend one week in Abidjan. From there he flies to Liberia.

    At the airport, he was met by the Ivory Coast Agriculture Minister, Mr. Abdoulays Sawadogo, the Israeli Ambassador, Mr. Nissim Yosha, and several officials from the Ivory Coast Government.

    Before he was driven away from the airport, he told newsmen he was hoping for closer co-operation between the Ivory Coast and Israel.

    SYNOPSIS: The Israeli Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Hayim Gvati, arrived in Abidjan on Tuesday for a seven-day visit as guest of the Ivory Coast Government. He was met by the Ivory Coast Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Sawadoga, and the Israeli Ambassador, Mr. Yosha with his party. Officially, it's a courtesy visit. Mr. Gvati is also trying to stop the erosion of Israel's position in Africa.

    Before leaving, Mr. Gvati told newsmen he hoped to see closer agricultural ties between Israel and the Ivory Coast. His next stop was Liberia.
