  • Description

THE FOURTH TEST BETWEEN SOUTH AFRICA AND ENGLAND ENDED IN A DRAW IN JOHANNESBURG TODAY (WEDNESDAY). SOUTH AFRICA TOOK A STRONG GRIP ON THE MATCH YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), THANKS TO SOME FINE BATTING BY SKIPPER TREVOR GODDARD AND TONY PITHEY.

SOUTH AFRICA BEGAN THEIR SECOND INNINGS WITH A SIX-RUN LEAD. AFTER LOSING EDDIE BARLOW WITH THE SCORE AT 65, PITHEY JOINED GODDARD FOR A HURRICANE SECOND-WICKET PARTNERSHIP OF 115.

IT WAS GODDARD WHO DID MOST OF THE SCORING. HE HIT THREE SIXES AS HE RACED TO 89 BY THE CLOSE OF PLAY -- AND IN DOING SO PASSED THE 2,000-RUN MARK IN TEST CRICKET. TODAY HE WENT ON TO SCORE 112, HIS FIRST CENTURY IN 32 TESTS.

GODDARD ATTACKED THE OFF-SIDE WITH SLASHING CUTS AND POWERFUL DRIVES. PITHEY WAS CONTENT TO LEAVE THE RUN-MAKING TO HIS CAPTAIN. THE RHODESIAN-BORN ALL-ROUNDER PICKED UP HIS RUNS IN MAINLY SINGLES. HE WAS UNBEATEN AT 35 BY YESTERDAY'S CLOSE, AND TODAY WAS OUT FOR 42 WHEN TRYING TO FORCE THE PACE.

ENGLAND'S BOWLERS TOILED THROUGH THE LONG DAY. THE PITCH OFFERED LITTLE ASSISTANCE. BUT THE FIELDING MAINTAINED THE SAME HIGH STANDARDS AS IT HAS THROUGHOUT THE TOUR.

FINAL SCORES: SOUTH AFRICA 390 FOR 6 DEC. AND 306 FOR DEC. ENGLAND 384 AND 153 FOR 6.

(ENGLAND GO INTO THE FINAL TEST -- STARTING AT PORT ELIZABETH ON FEBRUARY 12 -- ONE UP).
