    LEE KUAN YEW BECAME THE FIRST PRIME MINISTER OF SINGAPORE IN 1959. HIS APPOINTMENT FOLLOWED CONSTITUTIONAL TALKS IN LONDON WHICH TURNED THE ISLAND FROM A BRITISH CROWN COLONY INTO A SELF-GOVERNING STATE.

    MR. LEE WAS BORN IN SINGAPORE IN SEPTEMBER, 1923, HE SON OF A WEALTHY FAMILY OF THE CHINESE COMMUNITY. IN 1939, HE OBTAINED THE BEST RESULTS IN THE WHOLE OF MALAYA IN THE CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATIONS. LATER HE READ LAW AT CAMBRIDGE, TAKING A DOUBLE FIRST AND HEADING THE HONOURS LIST.

    HE HAS BEEN A VIGOROUS SOCIALIST SINCE HIS STUDENT DAYS. BACK IN SINGAPORE AS A BARRISTER, HE HELPED TO FOUND THE PEOPLE'S ACTION PARTY N 1954. HE CAMPAIGNED IN SHIRTSLEEVES "TO FIGHT AGAINST THE WHITE MAN" AND ACTED AS NEGOTIATOR FOR TRADE UNIONS IN A NUMBER OF BITER WAGE DISPUTES. HIS PARTY WAS OFTEN IN TROUBLE WITH THE BRITISH COLONIAL AUTHORITIES AND A NUMBER OF ITS LEADERS WERE IMPRISONED.

    IN SEPTEMBER, 1963, FOUR YEARS AFTER HE BECAME PRIME MINISTER, MR. LEE LED SINGAPORE INTO THE FEDERATION OF MALAYSIA -- DESPITE OPPOSITION FROM THE ISLAND STATE'S EXTREME LEFT-WING GROUP.

    AFTER SINGAPORE BROKE AWAY FROM MALAYSIA IN AUGUST, 1965, MR. LEE BECAME PRIME MINSTER OF INDEPENDENT SINGAPORE. HIS POLITICAL PROGRAMME AIMS AT DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM IN A MULTI-RACIAL SOCIETY WITH A NON-ALIGNED FOREIGN POLICY.
