  • Description

On their official visit to Eire, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco went up Ireland's "holy mountain", Croagh Patrick (2,600 feet high), June 15.

This is the scene of a great annual pilgrimage on the last Sunday in July. Normally, the pilgrims take off their shoes or wear rough boots for the rugged ascent over rocks. But Princess Grace (in a white rock with silk headscarf of leopard skin design) wore heavy brown shoes to enable her to scramble up.

She climbed 200 feet to the eight-foot-high statue of St. Patrick.

Then she blessed herself twice with holy water and kissed the base of the concrete statue. So did Prince Rainier. Thousands stood watching...

Later, they drove to the gaily decorated town of Westport. About 60 relatives of Princess Grace were presented to her; and she was given a marble jewel case.
