  • Description

THE SOUTH KOREAN GOVERNMENT'S POLICIES TOWARDS JAPAN CAME UNDER FIRE IN SEOUL IN SATURDAY. SPEAKERS AT A MASS RALLY CONDEMNED RECENT ACTIONS OF THE GOVERNMENT AIMED AT BRINGING ABOUT NORMAL DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

AFTER THE RALLY, DEMONSTRATORS, SHOUTING ANTI-GOVERNMENT SLOGANS AND CARRYING BANNERS, SCUFFLED WITH ARMED RIOT POLICE CLOSE TO THE SEOUL NATIONAL STADIUM WHERE THE MASS RALLY HAD BEEN HELD.

THE SOUTH KOREAN GOVERNMENT IS PLANNING TO NEGOTIATE WITH JAPAN FOR THE SETTING UP OF NORMAL DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS. THIS FOLLOWS A LENGTHY PERIOD OF ESTRANGEMENT. KOREA WAS PART OF THE JAPANESE EMPIRE FROM 1910 UNTIL THE COLLAPSE OF JAPAN IN 1945. THE DEFEAT WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A WAVE OF STRONG ANTI-JAPANESE FEELING IN KOREA WHICH DEMANDED THE IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWAL, NOT ONLY OF THE JAPANESE ADMINISTRATORS, BUT ALSO OF JAPANESE OFFICIALS WORKING WITH THE UNITED STATES FORCES.

IN FEBRUARY THIS YEAR, JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA SIGNED A BASIC RELATIONS TREATY AS A FIRST STEP TOWARDS NORMALISING THEIR RELATIONS.
