TRANSCRIPT: SEQ 5: BARGHOORN: "I WAS ACCUSED OF HAVING CONDUCTED INTELLIGENCE ACTIVITY DURING ALL OF MY TRIPS IN RUSSIA, BOTH DURING MY EMBASSY SERVICE AND DURING MY SIX TRIPS SINCE 1947. ACTUALLY DURING MY MOST RECENT TRIP, WHICH OF COURSE I SUPPOSE IS OF THE MOST IMMEDIATE INTEREST, I WAS SO CAREFUL THAT I DID NOT EVEN VISIT A SINGLE SOVIET HOME OR TALK MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES WITH A MEMBER OF THE OPPOSITE SEX, TO MENTION ONLY TWO AREAS OF CONDUCT."

"MOREOVER, I HAVE NOT EVEN TAKEN A CAMERA TO RUSSIA. I HAD NONE WITH ME ON THIS RECENT TRIP".

"THE PURPOSE OF MY VISIT WAS TO GATHER EVIDENCE FOR A BOOK WHICH I AM WORKING ON -- ON THE SOVIET POLITICAL SYSTEM, AND I AM PARTICULARLY INTERESTED TO INVESTIGATE THE METHODS OF POLITICAL INDUCTION AND INDOCTRINATION, AND AS I SAID BEFORE, I INFORMED THE SOVIET AUTHORITIES IN A NUMBER OF LETTERS TO THE APPROPRIATE OFFICIALS OF THIS INTENTION, AND THAT IS THE ANSWER TO THAT ONE".

Background: PROFESSOR FREDERICK BARGHOORN RETURNED HOME TO THE U.S. ON SUNDAY, ONE DAY AFTER HE WAS RELEASED FROM A PRISON IN MOSCOW AND EXPELLED FROM THE SOVIET UNION ON ESPIONAGE CHARGES.

AT HIS HOME TOWN OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, HE GAVE A PRESS CONFERENCE. HE TOLD JOURNALISTS THAT IT MAY NEVER BE KNOWN WHY HE WAS CHARGED WITH SPYING. HE REFUSED TO GIVE DETAILS OF HIS ARREST, DETENTION AND RELEASE UNTIL HE HAD SPOKEN WITH APPROPRIATE OFFICIALS IN WASHINGTON.

PROFESSOR BARGHOORN STRESSED THAT HE WAS CAREFUL TO DO NOTHING THAT WOULD CAUSE ANY ACCUSATIONS OR SUSPICIOUS BY THE SOVIET GOVERNMENT.

PROFESSOR BARGHOORN WAS THEN ASKED TO DESCRIBED THE PURPOSE OF HIS LAST VISIT TO THE SOVIET UNION.
