Since the overthrow of President Grunitzsky's Government and General Eyadema's accession to power, Togo has been a one party state. Late in 1977, an attempt to assassinate the President was foiled. A team of British-led mercenaries, believed to have been financed by an arms company, were betrayed and their mission aborted. In a speech during the celebrations, President Eyadema said he was pleased by the "self control" displayed by Togolese citizens during the mercenary plot". He said: "Attempts at invasion, the mercenaries and other forms of aggression will fail if we remain united." He did not elaborate on the origin and details of the plot.
