    RAMADAN, WHICH BEGAN THIS YEAR ON 11 NOVEMBER (IN SOME COUNTRIES 12 NOVEMBER), IS THE PERIOD DURING WHICH DEVOUT MUSLIMS NEITHER EAT NOR DRINK BETWEEN SUNRISE AND SUNSET, AND ITS OBJECT, LIKE THE CHRISTIAN LENT, IS TO DEVELOP SPIRITUALITY AND STRESS THE SUPREMACY OF SOUL OVER BODY.

    THE PRAYERS THAT MARKED THE END OF THE FAST ALSO SIGNALLED THE START OF THE FESTIVAL OF KORITE, WHICH IS MARKED BY FETES, FEASTS, AND THE GIVING OF ALMS. THIS FESTIVAL IS KNOWN AS IDD-EL-FITR IN OTHER MUSLIM COUNTRIES.
