Background: JAPAN HAS LAUNCHED ITS HEAVIEST ROCKET TO-DATE MORE THAN 300 MILES INTO SPACE. IT WEIGHED A LITTLE OVER SIX TONS AND MEASURED 53 FEET IN LENGTH.

THE ROCKET WAS LAUNCHED RECENTLY FROM THE KAGOSHIMA SPACE CENTER WHICH IS MAINTAINED AND OPERATED BY TOKYO UNIVERSITY'S INSTITUTE OF INDUSTRIAL SCIENCE.

THE LAMBA-2 ROCKET WAS SEVERAL TIMES LARGER THAN THE KAPPA TYPE PREVIOUSLY BUILT IN JAPAN. IT ALSO HAD THE CAPACITY TO CARRY 17 TIMES AS MUCH SCIENTIFIC MEASURING, RECORDING AND TRANSMITTING EQUIPMENT IN ITS NOSECONE.

SCIENTISTS COMMENTED THAT THE LAMBA SERIES OF ROCKET FIRINGS WILL MARK A BIG STEP FORWARD IN JAPAN'S SPACE EXPLORATION PROGRAMME. ON THIS OCCASION IT CARRIED ALOFT 380 LB OF SCIENTIFIC EQUIPMENT.
