  • Description

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat continued his United States visit on Tuesday (7 February) by trying to convince key members of the Congress in Washington to agree to arms sales to his country. According to Reuters, he made it clear to the legislators that his appeal for arms would go further than the present request for F5E fighter planes now being considered by the Carter administration.

SYNOPSIS: But it was other news, issued after he had met congressmen on Capitol Hill, that provided the talk of the day. This was a State Department announcement that President Carter expressed strong disapproval over new Israeli settlements in occupied Arab territories. According to Reuters, Mr. Carter sent a strongly-worded message last month to Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. After lunching with members of the Senate, Mr. Sadat spoke to reporters.
