  • Description

A major disaster was averted on Thursday (31 July) in Jerusalem, when an alert woman-passenger at the central Bus Station noticed a suspicious airline flight bag which had been left on a bench at Pier 3 -- one of the waiting bays.

She immediately informed the bus-driver, who opened the bag and looked inside. The driver happened to be familiar with bombs and booby-traps because of previous Army training, and he saw there was a time-bomb inside the bag. He shouted out that there was a bomb there, and was able to clear the area of people before the device went off a few minutes later.

Consequently the explosion occurred without killing or injuring anyone. The only victim was the bench where the bag had been left.

Security forces were quickly on the scene, and interviewed a French-speaking tourist who had been taking photographs in the vicinity a few minutes before the bomb was identified. The police took his film for examination in the hope that it might provide a clue to the identity of the person who planted the bomb.

The police also assembled the belongings scattered by the blast -- some of them the property of the woman who had first spotted the bag. They said later that other articles may have been connected with the terrorist.
