  • Description

Nepalese Premier Koirala and Chinese Premier Chou En-Lai flew from Katmandu April 27 to Pokhra for talks in the seclusion of the Royal Palace on an island in the middle of a lake. Pokhra, some 45 miles west of Nepal's capital, is a tiny resort nestled in the Himalayan ranges of Annapurna and Dha Ulagiri.

The Chinese are insisting that Mount Everest is theirs. A claim being strongly resisted by Nepal. Solu Khambu, a Nepalese area south of Everest, is also being claimed.

Reports from the lakeside talks April 28 said a tentative agreement on the basis of present jurisdiction had been reached. Premier Chou En-Lai is stated to have agreed to give up Chinese claims to the southern slopes of the peak, and suggested that the Sino-Nepalese border should run across the summit. Nepalese endorsement to this possible solution is still forthcoming. Another Chinese 'concession' dispenses with a system of joint approval for any expedition to Everest.

Both Premier agreed to conclude a treaty of 'Peace and Friendship', but Premier Chou En-Lai failed to persuade Premier Koirala to include a non-aggression clause. The new treaty was scheduled for signing later April 28.
