    In Australia, torrential rain caused a flood emergency at the town of Queanbeyan, near Canberra, Australia's capital. The floods, which were the worst for 100 years, devastated the New South Wales town and swamped parts of the capital itself. Authorities on Saturday began evacuating most of the 22,000 people of Queanbeyan because of warnings from engineers that a partly-built dam near the flooded town could burst.
