  • Description

Arab commando organisations based in Jordan have disagreed over President Nasser's acceptance of the latest U.S. proposal for a Middle East settlement.

Some commando groups have backed the United Arab Republic leader but others have protested against the Washington initiative and attacked President Nasser for going along with the American plan.

About 1,000 people attended one protest meeting on Wednesday (July 29) at Al-Hashemi Al-Shamali Mountain. The meeting was staged by the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Feelings in the rank and file of the powerful guerrilla movement have been running high since President Nasser announced on July 23 his acceptance of the plan, also proved by Jordan, but denounced by Iraq, Syria, Algeria and the commandos themselves.

The U.S. plan envisages peace talks under the U.N. during a 90-day truce.
