  • Description

EAST GERMAN CREWS, COMPETING AT THE HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA FOR THE FIRST TIME, CARRIED ALL BEFORE THEN IN TODAY'S FINALS - WINNING FIVE OF THE NINE TROPHIES OPEN TO FOREIGN CREWS TO SET AN ALL TIME RECORD. THE EAST GERMANS, WHO SENT SIX CREWS TO THE FOUR-DAY REGATTA, WERE CHEERED DOWN THE COURSE BY AN APPRECIATIVE CROWD OF 55,000 ATTENDING ONE OF BRITAIN'S MOST FASHIONABLE SPORTING EVENTS.

NEVER BEFORE HAS ANY COUNTRY WON SO MANY OF THE INTERNATIONAL EVENS SINCE THE REGATTA STARTED IN 1839. ONLY ONE OF THE EAST GERMAN CREWS WAS BEATEN. THE ONLY OTHER COUNTRIES TO MEET WITH SUCCESS AT HENLEY THIS YEAR WERE THE UNITED STATES AND DENMARK.

IN THE GRAND CHALLENGE CUP - THE PREMIER EVENT OF THE REGATTA THE EAST GERMAN EIGHT FROM T.S.C. BERLIN PROVED THEMSELVES AS SUPER-FIT AND EFFICIENT AS THE WEST GERMANS FROM RATZEBURG, WHO WON THE COVETED TROPHY LAST YEAR. IN THE SEMI-FINAL THE EAST GERMAN EIGHT HAD DISMISSED THE OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLISTS AND LAST YEAR'S RUNNERS-UP, THE VESPER BOAT CLUB OF THE UNITED STATES, AND IN THE FINAL THEY PUT UP A MAGNIFICENT STROKE-FOR-STROKE FIGHT AGAINST THE BRITISH TIDEWAY SCULLERS - ACCLAIMED THE BEST BRITISH EIGHT PRODUCED IN THE LAST 15 YEARS. THE SUPERBLY FIT AND STRONG GERMANS NEVER RELAXED OVER THE MILE 550 YARD (2,300 METRE) COURSE AND GOT HOME BY HALF A LENGTH IN THE FAST TIME OF SIX MINUTES 35 SECONDS.

TWO MEMBERS OF THE T.S.C. CREW, JORGHEN LUCKE AND HEINZE BOTHE, HAD ALREADY RACED OVER THE COURSE EARLIER TO WIN THE SILVER GOBLETS FOR PAIRS FROM THE BRITISH TEAM OF RAY EASTERLING AND JERRY MCCARTHY. AND IN THE DOUBLE SCULLS ANOTHER EAST GERMAN PAIR, MANFRED HAAKE AND JOACHIM BRUECKHANDLER, BEAT TWO BRITISH SCULLERS, NICK COOPER AND ARNOLD COOK.

A FURTHER VICTORY FOR THE EAST GERMANS CAME WHEN ACHIM HILL BEAT JAN WIENSESE OF HOLLAND BY A CONSIDERABLE MARGIN TO TAKE THE COVETED DIAMOND CHALLENGED SCULLS.

THE COXED FOURS FINAL FOR THE PRINCE PHILIP CHALLENGE CUP RESTED BETWEEN DYNAMO POTSDAM AND COPENHAGEN ROWIN CLUB (DENMARK) - WITH THE EAST GERMANS JUST GETTING THE BETTER OF THE STRUGGLE TO WIN BY ONE LENGTH.

DENMARK MADE THE WINNERS ENCLOSURE, HOWEVER, WITH A WIN BY THE KVIK CLUB OVER DERBY ROWING CLUB (BRITAIN) IN THE COXLESS FOURS. AND THE UNITED STATES CAME INTO THEIR OWN WHEN HARVARD UNIVERSITY BEAT ISIS (BRITAIN) IN THE THAMES CHALLENGE CUP FOR EIGHTS.
