    THE UNITED STATES IS TO BUILD A NAVAL COMMUNICATIONS STATION ON THE WEST AUSTRALIAN COAST UNDER AN AGREEMENT SIGNED IN CANBERRA ON MAY 9 BY THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR, MR.WILLIAM BATTLE, AND THE AUSTRALIAN MINISTER FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, SIR GARFIELD BARWICK.THE AGREEMENT, WHICH LIMITS THE STATIONS' USE TO DEFENCE COMMUNICATIONS, ALSO GIVES AUSTRALIA RIGHT TO ACCESS AT ALL TIMES.

    THE AMBASSADOR AND MINISTER BOTH SIGNED TWO COPIES OF THE AGREEMENT - ONE COPY TO BE RETAINED BY EACH GOVERNMENT.
