    An elementary school and a market place in Phnom Penh were hit by communist gunners on Thursday (6 February) killing 18 people, including 14 children.

    An official communique said at least 20 were injured. It was not known whether the school was hit by insurgent artillery or rocket fire.

    The schoolroom floor was said to be slippery with blood as police and school teachers carried out the bodies of the children -- all between the ages of seven and 10.

    Other children ran about in the schoolyard, screaming and crying. some were picked up by anxious parents waiting outside the School ground.

    The Khmer Information Minister Chann Son condemned the shelling of the school as a "deliberate massacre of innocent children."
    Meanwhile, the continued fighting has almost coast the Government two battalions. It's reported the insurgents had almost wiped out the battalions fighting southeast of the capital in the past few days.

    They claimed that at least 80 soldiers were killed and more than 300 wounded in clashes with the insurgents, some 30 kilometres (20 miles) from Phnom Penh.
