  • Description

The French horse Allez France on Sunday (6 October) won the worlds richest horse race -- the Prix de 1'Arc de Triomphe -- at Longshamp, near Paris.

Her jockey, Yves Saint Martin, launched a challenge on the home turn and Allez France quickly moved into the lead of the top-class field.

With the crowd cheering her on the four-year-old filly held the lead to the last .... although -- just short of the finishing post -- Comtesse de Loir loomed as a danger on the outside. Allez France pressed forward and won the first prize of 1,412,000 France (128,360 Sterling) by a head.

The third horse home was Margouillat.

Allez France is owned by M. Daniel Wildenstein and was trained by Angel Penna. It was the second Arc de Triomphe victory for both Allez France's jockey and trainer.

The French horse came second in last year's race when she was beaten by the British horse Rheingold. This year she started favorite. She is only the eighth filly to win the race in its 52-year history.

SYNOPSIS: The field got away to an even start and stayed together for the early part of the 2,400-metre race.

The only challenge came in the last furlong, when Comtesse de Loir moved to the outside but Allez France held off the challenge and won - on a photo finish - by a head. Margouillat came home third, fourth was the Aga Khan's Kamarran and fifth, Allez France's stable-mate Paulista.
