  • Description

The world's highest independent TV tower was formally opened to the public by President Hisakichi Maeda of the Nippon Radio Tower Co. and his daughter in Tokyo Dec 23.

Rising to a height of 333 metres the gigantic steel structure bears aerials for six TV station, facilitating transmission and reception on more than 60 different wavelengths. It brings TV facilities to an estimated 18 million viewers in and around the Kanton area.

The observation platform at a lofty height of 120 metres, built to take 1,000 tourists at a time, was inaugurated by a Shinto priest in the presence of the Nippon Radio Tower Co. President as his daughter cut the ceremonial ribbon across the entrance to the elevator. Some of the 200,000 workman who had built the tower in 18 months watched the ceremony.

Nearly eight million dollars went into the construction of the TV giant, but a lively tourists trade of about 20,000 visitors daily is expected to bring some of the expense back. Chief attraction: in clear weather an all round view as far as Mt. Fuji.
