TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 10: QUESTION: "YOU'VE BEEN THINKING AHEAD FOR THIS RACE. WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE HARDEST PART OF IT?"

CHICHESTER: "I WOULD THINK THE SAME AS LAST TIME. THAT YOU'VE GOT TO KEEP ON RACING HARD. PROBABLY THIS TIME ONE WILL HAVE TO RACE HARDER THAN EVER."

QUESTION: "NOW THIS WILL BE YOUR THIRD TIME CROSSING THE ATLANTIC ALONE, INCLUDING THE RACE OF 1962. WHY ARE YOU GOING AGAIN?"

CHICHESTER: "WELL YOU KNOW THIS RACE, I RECKON, IS THE GREATEST SAIL RACE I'VE EVER HEARD OF. AND IT'S A PRETTY BIG CHALLENGE THIS EAST TO WEST CROSSING OF THE ATLANTIC -3,000 MILES AGAINST THE WIND, AGAINST THE GULF STREAM. IT'S A REAL TRIAL OF SAILING."

Background: ONE OF THE TOUGHEST SAILING RACES IN THE WORLD STARTS TOMORROW (SATURDAY) FROM PLYMOUTH. FIFTEEN YACHTSMEN WILL BE SETTING OUT TO CROSS THE ATLANTIC SINGLE-HANDED TO NEW YORK. IT WILL TAKE THEM UP TO SIX WEEKS.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO THE IDEA OF RACING ACROSS THE ATLANTIC WOULD HAVE BEEN GENERALLY DISMISSED AS TOO HAZARDOUS AND STRENUOUS. THE ATLANTIC HAS BEEN SAILED ALONE BUT YACHTSMEN THEN TOOK THEIR TIME.

EVEN WHEN THE FIRST RACE SINGLE-HANDED WAS HELD IN 1960, MOST OF BRITAIN'S YACHTING FRATERNITY THOUGHT THE FEAT A FOOLHARDY ONE AND TO BE HAZARDED ONCE ONLY.

FIVE MEN COMPETED IN THE FIRST RACE. NOW THREE TIMES AS MANY ARE SUBJECTING THEMSELVES TO THE SOLITARY ADVENTURE AND ALL WITH THE AIM OF GETTING ACROSS FIRST.

FRANCIS CHICHESTER, AT 63, IS GOING FOR A THIRD TIME. HE WON THE 1960 RACE AND SAILED AGAIN IN 1962 AS A PERSONAL TEST. HE THEN TOOK A RECORD TIME OF 33 1/2 DAYS.
