  • Description

The body of former Bolivian President, Juan Jose Torres, who was murdered in Buenos Aires, has been flown to Mexico for burial. General Torres' widow, his daughter and three sons accompanied the body aboard a Mexican Airline plane.

SYNOPSIS: General Torres was kidnapped on the first of the month and was found murdered the following day. He was shot three times through the head. A right-wing death squad is suspected of killing him. The General, a left-winger, was living in exile in Buenos Aires since he was ousted from power five years ago. Bolivia's military government denounced his killing as a most reprehensible crime and declared national mourning for the former President. An Air Force plane was put at the disposal of the General's widow and the Bolivian Embassy in Buenos Aires was instructed to give her all possible assistance. But the Bolivian government later refused to fly the body home after the General's widow rejected its plans for a quick military burial.

The General's family had proposed a 24-hour lying in state at the head-quarters of Bolivia's 35,000-strong Mineworkers Federation and at San Andres University in La Paz. When the Bolivian government refused to allow this, the General's widow announced the Mexican President Luis Echevarria had offered to let her husband's remains rest in his country. General Torres, one of the most left-wing Bolivian rulers this century, is the third prominent foreign exile to be murdered in Argentina since the military seized power three months ago.
